The Department of English traces its origins to the English Second Specialization Program and the Foreign Language Minor previously offered by the Department of Language Education at National University of Tainan.
It was established in 2006 and admits 43 students every year. The night school division started in 2009.
The department is currently chaired by Professor Yue-Ju Tsou.
Graduates of the program will be equipped with the following skills:
- Proficiency in English and Mandarin listening, speaking, reading, and writing for both professional and daily us.
- Foundational oral and written translation abilities in English and Mandarin for workplace settings.
- Interdisciplinary research skills relevant to contemporary needs.
- The ability to apply language and cross-disciplinary knowledge in real-world professional environments.
- Cross-cultural communication skills and readiness for international mobility
The department offers two main academic tracks:
Language and Literature
Applied Foreign Languages
Both tracks include required and elective courses. Students must complete 36 credits of core required courses, and choose one track as a major (68 credits) and the other as a minor (24 credits).
The department currently has seven full-time faculty members, all of whom hold doctoral degrees.
The team includes three full professors and four associate professors, each bringing expertise and academic excellence to the program.
- To be devoted to English academic study and integrating English academic theory with practice.
- To cultivate English teachers for junior high schools and elementary schools.
- To expand curriculum design, teaching facilities, and to cultivate English teachers for pre-school
education according to the supply and demand of the English teaching profession. - To cultivate English talents for publicly-owned or privately-owned enterprises, and support the
demand for English professional talents resulting from globalization and internationalization. - To help to raise the English learning environment inside the country and the citizens’ basic English communicative ability. To promote international cultural exchange, and raise our country’s international image and position.
- Our graduates can find promising positions in the job market as English education professionals, overseas Chinese teachers, translators or interpreters, tour guides, staff in journalism and cultural businesses, representatives of international enterprises, as well as qualified professionals in many other areas of business sector.
